Drinking more water lowers the concentration of salts in the blood, which tells the brain to stop releasing a hormone that triggers stress responses. This causes the pituitary gland to release less of another stress hormone, which in turn tells the adrenal glands to produce less cortisol. This chain reaction is strongest in people who started with the highest stress hormone levels.
