Lifting heavy weights stretches and pulls muscle fibers with extreme force, tearing small parts of the fiber membranes. This tear lets creatine kinase, a protein normally inside the muscle, leak out into the blood. Lighter weights do not pull hard enough to cause this kind of tear, so less creatine kinase escapes.
