When a person does moderate aerobic exercise, their muscles and immune cells produce more energy using oxygen, which cleans up damaged parts of the energy factories inside cells. This cleanup reduces harmful chemicals that trigger inflammation. As a result, the DNA in immune cells becomes less accessible at sites that turn on inflammatory genes, and more accessible at sites that turn on calming genes. This change sticks around, so the immune cells stay less reactive to triggers like bacteria, even after exercise stops.
