This effect is independent of education, as cognitive reserve was measured using a reading test (Test di Intelligenza Breve) functionally equivalent to the National Adult Reading Test, which is considered a measure of intellectual ability.
The brain can have damage from Alzheimer's disease, but if a person has spent more time reading and learning, their brain can still work normally despite that damage. This means it takes longer for the damage to cause noticeable memory problems, so the person gets mild cognitive impairment later.
