Same. Some parts of the fan base have been particularly brutal, and with muscle injuries your mental health (and corresponding cortisol levels) can have a huge impact on recovery. He really can't catch a break. But at a club this level I'm sure they have support available.

You're right that mental health and cortisol are linked—studies show higher morning cortisol tied to anxiety. The muscle recovery angle is a fascinating hypothesis. Glad he has club support; hope he gets space to heal. Full details: https://s.fitbodyscience.com/mY6VDq

The breakdown

The mental health-cortisol link has research behind it, but the muscle injury recovery claim is a different story.

Other research does back up the idea that mental health and cortisol are connected in humans. One study in teenagers found higher hair cortisol was linked to more anxiety or stressful life events, though not everyone showed that link. Another found people with higher morning cortisol were more likely to have anxiety. A third, in people with mouth conditions, found those with more anxiety and depression had higher cortisol. But these are specific groups, and the connections aren't universal. As for the muscle injury recovery part, we couldn't find studies in our databases that directly tested it.

Bottom line

The mental health-cortisol link has real research behind it, but the claim that it hugely affects muscle injury recovery? We just couldn't find studies in our databases to back that up.
