When the body has very little sugar from food, it starts breaking down fat for energy. The liver takes this fat and turns it into small fuel molecules called ketone bodies, which other parts of the body use instead of sugar.

When you eat very few carbs, your liver normally turns fat into ketones for energy. This study shows that happens in healthy people, but in people with fatty liver, this process doesn’t work as well—so it still supports the basic idea, just shows it can be broken in disease.
When people ate less carbs and fasted for parts of the day, their bodies started making ketones—tiny fuel molecules from fat—which showed up in their urine. This proves their liver was turning fat into energy because carbs were low.
When the mice ate very little carbs, their livers started turning fat into ketones — and the study proved it by measuring a big jump in ketone levels. So yes, low carbs make the liver produce ketones from fat.
